The first year that we started homeschooling, it was through an on-line charter school (because I was frankly terrified that I would not know how to teach my kids without help) and the kids had a teacher who was incredible. So the kids were finally happy with school, but I was totally underwater. For the first few months of the school year, my kids and I fought through each day from 8 till 5 or 6 in the evening because I simply couldn’t get them to pay attention longer than about 30 seconds at a time. It was a nightmare.
So here was my saving grace: the kids’ teacher made herself available to me whenever I needed it. All I had to do was email or text her with a question and she would reply or call back within an hour or so with advice and encouragement. She was an angel looking over my shoulder, always there and always encouraging me. If it wasn’t for that, I am not sure we would have been able to continue our grand homeschooling adventure.
So I hope that ByMoms4Moms can be a place online where you can go for advice and specifically about teaching math (at least for now) and communicate with moms who homeschool that have varying types of kids (everything from gifted to autistic to simply plain old kids, like mine).
